With solar updraft towers sunlight falls on a greenhouse-like collector structure. The sunshine heats air that flows through a chimney. The resulting convection drives wind turbines, which produce electricity. In the collector area it is possible to store heat for later use. Solar updraft towers need significant amounts of land, which makes them hardly realisable in densely populated areas. However, very simple design and the potential to combine it with agriculture make them an interesting alternative to photovoltaic or concentrated solar power.
