I will give you some tips how to use solar energy in an apartment, a rented house or another place where you have restricted influence on deciding where your power comes from. If you are lucky enough to have a garden or another place that receives enough sunlight, you can still produce your own electricity. You can buy portable solar panels or a parabolic dish, or build solar panels or a parabolic dish yourself, specific to your needs. You can also use solar lamps that you charge during the day.
Another idea is to use metal tanks, glass or black material to heat water or food. Harnessing solar energy to grow food in glasshouses or aquaponics systems or with other highly efficient methods is also something you could do.
Try to find out if there are solar energy companies, communities or cooperatives in your area that you can purchase your electricity from. Keep up-to-date with new technologies like thin-film technologies. In the near future you might be able to buy photovoltaic curtains or other gadgets that you can easily mount and dismount any time. Those things do already exist.
